Over 8,000 nuraghi scattered throughout Sardinia, constructions that defy time, monuments among the most significant of the ancient megalithic cultures of the western Mediterranean.
And the Nuragic village of Palmavera fits perfectly into this context, presenting itself as one of the most important and significant sites that the Nuragic civilization has built on the island.
Located at the foot of the mountain of the same name, the Palmavera complex is divided into two towers made of large blocks of limestone and sandstone, located in the center of a pentagonal-shaped surrounding wall that incorporates three hut towers and the majestic Capanna delle Riunioni.
All around extends the village currently composed of about 50 huts but whose remains bear witness to the memory of a past in which a greater number of homes made up our wonderful site.
Walking along the streets that separate the huts with their simple and circular shape, it will be possible to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this ancient village that will tell us about the daily life lived 3,600 years ago, when skilled hands shaped the stone to build mighty towers.
You will enter those large stone towers to breathe in the scent of history, to admire works of high engineering and construction skill, evidence of a great civilization: the Nuragic Civilization.
One of the most evocative environments is certainly represented by the Hut of the Meetings, an environment of extreme interest that summarizes the will of a people to identify and build a place of debate, of comparison but also of worship. Inside you can appreciate a model of a nuraghe, of fine workmanship, a counter-seat that follows the circular profile of the hut, on which the most important people of the village, the tribal chiefs, sat and a throne-seat, intended to host the most charismatic person of the village, which represents a unicum in the Sardinian archaeological panorama and constitutes a clear example of the Nuragic craftsmanship.
A real complex that is extremely educational, easy to read, able to give an idea of the society of the time and the expertise of these highly skilled architects of the Bronze Age.
Among the finds exhibited at the archaeological museum of Sassari and in the new Museum of the city of Alghero, there are vases of all shapes and sizes, a bronze button that represents a quadrilobate nuraghe, a bone stamp decorated with circles, lamps and many objects and remains of meals that tell the story of this ancient village and the activities that took place inside it.
They tell of an important village that had various construction phases and that following a fire, the causes of which are still being discussed, led to its abandonment around the 8th century BC.
How to get there: From Alghero take the road towards Fertilia; once past the village take the SS 127 bis towards Porto Conte-Capo Caccia after about 4 km at km 45,450, on the right, you will find the entrance to the Nuragic village.
